He made this statement on Facebook.“The date for the meeting between the American and Russian leaders in Budapest has not yet been agreed upon, and there is already clear evidence of attempts to block it at any cost. This is sad,” Fico said.He mentioned that the head of a European foreign ministry spoke of a possible delay of Putin’s plane, referring to Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, as well as statements about arresting the Kremlin leader under an ICC warrant.“I have always said that the EU has turned into a war cabinet, with a significant number of member states supporting the war in Ukraine, naively believing that this can weaken or even defeat Russia. At the same time, paradoxically, but typical of the EU’s impotent foreign policy, some EU leaders are already pressuring for the Budapest summit to take place, as well as for the presence of the Ukrainian president. In Slovakia, this is called ‘throwing a wrench into a possible agreement,’” the prime minister wrote.According to Fico, the European Union should do everything possible to ensure the Trump-Putin meeting in Budapest happens as soon as possible, “if it really wants a quick peace in Ukraine.”Hungary: many will try to stop the summitHungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that the “pro-war political elite” and the media “always behave this way before events that could prove decisive between war and peace.”“From the moment the Peace Summit in Budapest was announced, it was obvious that many would do everything possible to stop it from happening… It’s the same story before almost every European Council meeting, before decisions on sanctions or on the European Peace Facility,” he wrote on X.Szijjártó also added that fake news and statements about the summit should be expected until the Trump-Putin meeting actually takes place. On October 21, CNN reported that the Donald Trump–Vladimir Putin summit in Budapest was under threat due to the postponement of a planned meeting between Marco Rubio and Sergey Lavrov.Later, Reuters reported that Trump and Putin do not plan to meet “in the near future.”
