Details: Trump said he has never stated that Ukraine would win the war.
Quote: "They [Ukraine] could still win it. I don't think they will, but they could still win it. I never said they would win it. I said they could win. Anything can happen. War is a very strange thing. A lot of bad things happen, a lot of good things happen."
Background:
- In September, Trump unexpectedly spoke optimistically about Ukraine's chances of regaining control over its territory within internationally recognised borders.
- After a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 17 October, Trump said that Ukraine and Russia "should stop where they are".
- Zelenskyy did not argue with this view but reminded him that Ukraine had not started the war and that it is not Ukraine that has to stop.
- According to The Washington Post, during his conversation with Trump, Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin demanded full control over Donetsk Oblast as a condition to end the war.
- Trump has said he supports freezing the war between Russia and Ukraine along the current front line and denied claims that he urged Zelenskyy to cede the entire territory of Donetsk Oblast.
