Details : Peskov referred to Trump's reported comments that stopping troops at their current positions should be the first step towards full-scale peace talks as "newspaper reports".
Quote from Peskov : "This topic [of halting troops along the line of contact] has been raised repeatedly, with various nuances, during Russian–American contacts. The Russian side has responded each time, and that response is well known: Russia's position remains unchanged."
Background :
- According to the Financial Times, during his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 17 October, US President Donald Trump urged Ukraine to accept Russia's conditions for ending the war and said that Russian ruler Vladimir Putin had threatened to "destroy" Ukraine if it refused.
- Trump later denied that he had pressured Zelenskyy to agree to Russia's terms or to hand over all of Donbas. Trump said that he believed Russia and Ukraine should just stop where they are.
- Immediately after meeting Zelenskyy, Trump called for a peace deal and for both sides to "stop where they are" on the battlefield.
