A NATO leadership representative revealed the numbers to journalists at a briefing at NATO headquarters, speaking on condition of anonymity. The Alliance reported that Russia’s losses increased in September compared to the previous month, but remain lower than during the particularly heavy “meat-grinder” assaults in the spring and last year. At the start of autumn, Russian daily losses averaged 950 personnel.“Russia still suffers an extremely high level of losses. In 2025, we observed an average of 1,200 daily casualties, and now the total has already surpassed 1.1 million, of which over 250,000 were killed in action,” the NATO official shared. The official also expressed confidence that Ukraine’s defensive line will hold despite the pressure.“Although we continue to observe gradual Russian advances, we believe that in the short term the collapse of Ukraine’s defensive lines remains highly unlikely,” the representative said.NATO acknowledges significant losses of Ukrainian-controlled territory but notes a slowdown in Russia’s offensive pace.“Russian ground forces likely captured about 250 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in September, a noticeable decrease compared to roughly 465 square kilometers captured in August. This reduction in area is most likely linked to the significant redeployment of several Russian divisions along the front line,” the representative explained. On October 14, British intelligence reported that Russia has lost about 1,118,000 troops since the start of its war against Ukraine, including up to 332,000 this year alone.
