The Kirishi oil refinery, one of the largest in Russia, has halted the crude distillation unit CDU-6 – the plant's most powerful unit – following a drone attack and a subsequent fire on 4 October.

Details: The shutdown could lead to a slight reduction in fuel production amid Russia's ongoing fuel crisis, as the country faces shortages of popular petrol grades due to continued Ukrainian drone attacks on its energy infrastructure.

According to the sources, the CDU-6 unit has a capacity of 8 million tonnes per year, or 160,000 barrels per day – about 40% of the refinery's total processing capacity.
During the CDU-6 downtime, the refinery will reportedly operate at about 70% capacity by overloading other processing units.
Industry sources estimate that the refinery processed 17.5 million tonnes of crude oil in 2024, accounting for 6.6% of Russia's total refining volume. Last year, it produced 2 million tonnes of petrol, 7.1 million tonnes of diesel, 6.1 million tonnes of fuel oil and 600,000 tonnes of bitumen.
Background: Ukrainian drone strikes, which since early August have hit more than 20 major oil refineries across Russia, have plunged the country's fuel market into an unprecedented crisis.
