Reuters reported the information.Following a recent incident where drones crossed into Polish airspace, EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius is spearheading an initiative to address what analysts and officials describe as dangerous gaps in Europe's air defense capabilities. The proposed project aims to establish a comprehensive system of sensors, jamming technology, and various weapons to detect and neutralize hostile drones."We want really to move ahead with very, very intensive and effective preparations to start to fill this gap, which is really very dangerous for us... as quickly as we can do it," Kubilius stated in an interview. To accelerate the project, Kubilius will convene a video conference with defense ministers from Eastern European nations and will include representatives from Ukraine. He emphasized Kyiv's willingness to contribute its extensive battlefield experience in countering Russian drones since the 2022 invasion. "I just came back from Kyiv two days ago and we were talking both with the government and also with industry," said Kubilius, a former Lithuanian prime minister. "They're keen to share their experience and know-how."While discussions are in the preliminary stages and cost estimates have not been determined, some analysts suggest a functional system could be deployed within a year. The urgency for such a defense system was highlighted last week when several drones entered Poland from the direction of Ukraine, where Russian forces were conducting attacks. Although NATO and Polish forces successfully downed some of the drones, the event exposed significant vulnerabilities.
