IAEA adopts resolution urging Russian withdrawal from Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

The Ministry of Energy reported the information.Ukraine initiated the resolution with the support of its international partners and became another important signal from the global community regarding the unacceptable actions of Russia, which threaten nuclear safety across the continent. The document was supported by 62 member states.“We are grateful to every country that supported this important document. 62 votes in favor send a clear message from the civilized world: nuclear terrorism is unacceptable, and the Zaporizhzhia NPP, occupied by Russia, must be immediately returned under Ukraine’s control. We will continue working with the IAEA and our partners to ensure every point of this resolution is implemented,” said Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Svitlana Hrynchuk.Resolution contentsThe resolution includes a direct call for the immediate withdrawal of all unauthorized military and other personnel from the Zaporizhzhia NPP. The document confirms that the Zaporizhzhia NPP and all nuclear facilities in Ukraine must operate under the full sovereign control of competent Ukrainian authorities.The resolution also reaffirmed the mandate and continuous work of the IAEA mission at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, despite Russia’s ongoing attempts to undermine its activities.The presence of Agency experts ensures that every incident, risk, and attack is recorded and brought to the international level.At the same time, the resolution highlighted Russian strikes on the Chernobyl exclusion zone and damage to the New Safe Confinement, which pose risks to international nuclear safety.“The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine regards this resolution as a step toward restoring nuclear safety,” the statement said.For reference, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest in Europe, has been under Russian occupation since March 4, 2022.On September 17, the IAEA team at the Zaporizhzhia NPP recorded shelling near the site, causing black smoke to rise in three locations.
