Military ombudsman to tackle soldier rights violations — Ukrainian lawmaker

Espreso correspondent Kateryna Halko reports.On September 17, the parliament approved the law on the military ombudsman, No. 13266, in its second reading. As explained by lawmaker Solomiia Bobrovska, this is a tool to ensure the rights of military personnel are upheld during their service.The law delineates the functional powers of the Commissioner for Human Rights and the military ombudsman."The military ombudsman is about violations of rights during military service. This means issues related to combat, transfers, excessive use of force, legal cases, including administrative and criminal liability, and matters of communication with families," noted Bobrovska.She explained that the commissioner for military rights will be a civilian. They will be appointed by the president for a five-year term. This will be an official who can provide qualified answers and support to service members."This institution should be able to resolve a number of issues, at least in a hands-on manner," emphasized the MP.She stressed that this tool shapes the attitude of military personnel towards the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Defense Forces.Currently, more than 1,000 complaints are received from military personnel each month. The new law is intended to improve the situation.On September 17, the parliament supported the law on the military ombudsman in its second reading. It stipulates that the ombudsman will monitor the observance of the rights of military personnel.
