The Financial Times reported the information.According to the outlet, drones repeatedly struck data centers and network equipment that manage internet traffic. In July and August alone, Russia experienced over 2,000 mobile service outages, three times more than in June.“The war has reached Russia itself: Ukrainian drones are striking, and this is how the authorities are trying to respond,” explained Mykhailo Klimaryov, director of the Internet Protection Society. The outages hit regions with a high concentration of defense enterprises the hardest. In the Nizhny Novgorod region, residents of some districts were without network access for over two months.Communication disruptions forced locals to switch to cash payments: in July, cash in circulation in Russia rose by $2.2 billion. The Central Bank officially acknowledged the problems, citing “temporary internet interruptions.”Russian state media cover the topic minimally, but eyewitnesses confirm that in many regions, service is restored only after weeks or remains unstable. The Financial Times emphasizes that drone attacks on communication infrastructure are part of Ukraine’s strategy to weaken Russia’s military and logistical capabilities. On September 12, Russians claimed drone attacks on 13 regions, with the Russian Ministry of Defense reporting the alleged downing of 221 drones.
