Defense Express reported the information.Russian forces are increasingly modifying Shahed (Geran-2) 'kamikaze' drones with advanced equipment that allows them to function as first-person view (FPV) systems. Recent battlefield recoveries revealed a full set of hardware—including mesh-network modems, antennas, and forward-mounted cameras—inside downed drones, confirming that Moscow has moved from experimental use to serial production of these upgrades. The drones are now frequently using Chinese-made mesh modems (XK-F358, rebranded as HX-50) similar to those earlier spotted on smaller Geran drones. These devices allow multiple drones to create an interconnected communication chain, extending their reach and making them harder to disrupt. The addition of onboard cameras, even if not high-resolution, gives operators a direct forward-facing view—sufficient for mid-flight corrections or last-minute target adjustments. Experts believe this significantly increases the effectiveness of Shahed strikes, especially in complex urban environments. While the exact method of transmitting and relaying data remains under debate, analysts suggest Russia might be using hidden ground relays in occupied territories. Others note the possibility of airborne “drone chains” acting as repeaters, though this would be more technically challenging. The adaptations mark a troubling new phase in Russia’s drone warfare, signaling a shift toward more maneuverable, precise, and resilient unmanned attacks.
