Veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war and retired National Guard major Oleksii Hetman shared his opinions with Espreso TV.He commented on Radio Free Europe’s report about the construction of new military bases in Belarus, including ones for Oreshnik missiles.“Nothing will change. Fundamentally, nothing will change. If we’re talking about Oreshnik, it’s a medium-range missile that flies almost into space. It attacks from space, so it hardly matters whether it launches from Belarus or a few hundred kilometers in another direction. If it isn’t destroyed at launch, it can only be intercepted at the end of its flight, because it rises into near space where there are no means to destroy it,” Hetman said. The expert recalled Russia’s strike on Dnipro, noting that although a video showed dummy warheads, it was essentially the same missile, only without a live warhead, as far as is known.“They will fall vertically from above, and at that moment a Patriot system can intercept them as a missile defense system. Again, it will fall on the target vertically from above. Where it came from in near space above the target doesn’t matter at all. Not at all,” he concluded.Radio Free Europe journalists reported that new military bases are being built in Belarus – one of these sites near Minsk could have strategic importance for Russia in the war against Ukraine, as experts believe it may host Russian Oreshnik ballistic missiles.
