In August the number of combat engagements was the lowest of the four months of the summer campaign — 5,027. As a result, the pace of territory occupation fell by 18%, to 464 km². That could suggest a certain stagnation of the summer offensive. Still, Russian forces are reportedly regrouping to try at the last moment to complete some objectives and create a threat of encircling Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka.

Consequently, the number of Russian losses has declined all summer. In August it hit a record low — 28,790, the smallest figure since April 2024. However, a positive sign is that, for the first time in the war’s history, the killed-to-wounded ratio among Russians stands at 1 to 3, reportedly in favor of the killed.

The Russian army’s situation is further complicated because supplies for an attack on Kupiansk’s northern outskirts must pass through a narrow controlled zone in Holubivka. Nearby in Kindrashivka Ukrainian troops are locked in fierce fighting over a village that currently has no clear controller. Enemy reconnaissance-and-sabotage groups keep trying to infiltrate the city, but they are being destroyed.
Ukraine Russia war live map, August 30 – September 6, photo: EspresoAlthough Russia’s forces captured Dvorichna, they still can’t gather enough resources to push an offensive on Kupiansk from the right bank of the Oskil. The left-bank front has remained largely static for years. This week Kremlin forces tried to improve their tactical position, attacking from the north and south around Stepova Novoselivka and advancing about 1.5 km west into the gray zone. The Ukrainian forces counterattacked from the southern flank and reclaimed several hundred meters.South of Kupiansk, Russia’s 1st Tank Army reached the Oskil near Kruhliakivka almost a year ago and has been unable to advance toward Borova or Kupiansk since. They are therefore constantly looking for new breakout opportunities.New offensive on Dobropillia and PokrovskOn the Pokrovsk axis in August — as in many months before — more than a third of all fighting took place. On the western flank in Udachne there were repeated clashes in which certain streets or buildings changed hands, but the overall frontline essentially did not move. The situation is similar in neighboring Kotlyne, where the enemy failed to break Ukrainian defenses and did not advance further north to cut the last logistical artery to Hryshyne.

They aim to reach the Selydove–Pokrovsk highway near Chunyshyne and collapse our defenses around Dachenske. From the east, Russian forces made a rare attempt to break through to Myrnohrad from Novoekonomichne with an armored column. However, the Ukrainian Armed Forces not only destroyed the column but — in the wake of the fleeing units — entered and cleared previously uncontrolled streets of Novoekonomichne.By concentrating significant resources on the push toward Dobropillia, Russian forces have effectively slowed their offensives on Rodynske and Chervonyi Lyman, allowing the Defense Forces to stabilize the situation there. North of Rodynske, Ukrainian troops pushed the Russians back around Zatyshok and Boikivka, complicating the enemy’s position in Sukhetske and Fedorivka. The Defense Forces likely plan to regain control of all territory west of the Kazennyi Torets River to secure the flank between Pokrovsk and Dobropillia.

The invaders still aim not only to consolidate the Dobropillia breach but to widen it and push deeper. In the first phase they secured their wedge by expanding control from Maiak to Volodymyrivka and seizing Pankivka. From the Poltavka side they have already pushed fighting into the eastern outskirts of Shakhove and into Volodymyrivka, which Ukraine deoccupied two weeks ago.Additionally, Russian forces have sent reinforcements here — reportedly four brigades and one naval infantry regiment, mainly from the Sumy and Kursk regions and partly from Kherson.Novopavlivka front has split in twoTrends that emerged over the past few weeks have deepened. The Defense Forces not only stabilized the situation south of Novopavlivka but continued to counterattack. In particular, the Ukrainian army pressed the advance on Tolstoi and destroyed Russian soldiers who tried to storm Andriivka–Klevtsove. The push on Oleksandrohrad has also stalled.

Lacking enough strength to advance along the nearly 100 km length of the Novopavlivka front, the enemy shifted focus, aiming for a breakthrough deeper into the Dnipropetrovsk region toward Velykomykhailivka. Although the Special Operations Forces eliminated those who broke through to Novoselivka last week, the Russian troops keep trying to outflank Sichneve from both north and south—where they have nearly encircled the defenders of Maliivka and repeatedly pushed toward the outskirts of Vorone.

At the same time, further south on the Zaporizhzhia region border, the Defense Forces managed to hold the Russians near Ternove.Ukraine’s Armed Forces are showing their “maps”In Crimea, three Flamingo missiles struck the border outpost in Armyansk and completely destroyed it, damaging six patrol boats. In the days before this, Ukrainian forces disabled S‑300 and S‑400 air‑defense radars. Thus, before sending the Flamingos on long‑range missions, the Defense Forces tested them in a way that visibly demonstrated the results not only to Putin but also to NATO partners.

Ukrainian drones set fire to nine oil refineries (some of them two or three times), struck pumping stations three times, damaged one gas‑processing complex, hit dozens of fuel depots, and targeted a number of military‑industrial facilities.
Ukraine Russia war live map, photo: EspresoRail links have been subject to almost daily strikes, with a particular focus on the southern regions: the Rostov and Volgograd regions and Krasnodar Krai. Over the past 43 days, Ukrainian forces have struck 24 targets, most of them in August when many Russians went to the seaside — and operations have continued into September. At the same time, Russian airports are being closed almost daily because of the UAV threat, and flights are canceled or postponed. Thus, the enemy logistics intended to supply the southern front and prepare for a new offensive in Zaporizhzhia have been largely paralyzed, and the offensive has once again been postponed. The maps were created based on information received from the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ General Staff, as well as from other open and verified sources. At the same time, the maps are not maximally precise and only conventionally reflect trends in the combat zone.
