This opinion was expressed on Espreso TV by Rear Admiral (ret.) of the Ukrainian Navy, strategic expert at Sonata company, and former Deputy Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian Navy (2004-2020) Andriy Ryzhenko."After the collapse of the USSR, the Russians indeed faced many problems, and those ships they used to build, notably in Mykolaiv, can no longer be built. Now, they are actively building ships with a displacement of up to 1,000 tons. These are ships for the near-sea zone. They simply don’t have the resources or technologies for anything larger," Ryzhenko explained. The captain believes there’s no point in using sea drones against boats, as maneuverable boats can easily avoid collisions with a sea drone.“When Ukraine began using maritime unmanned drones, the Russians don’t need to use these drones for the same purpose we do. We simply don’t have such ships. Ukraine has many boats, but sea drones will never catch them, because the boats are highly maneuverable, and using sea drones against them wouldn’t be effective. However, the Russians are developing sea drones primarily, in my opinion, for sabotage and diversions. Specifically, diversions against critical maritime infrastructure. These drones can approach our ports and deliver strikes. One such drone can carry up to 500 kg of explosives, which could seriously damage infrastructure. Another goal could be to exert strategic influence on the grain corridor. They could use these drones against civilian vessels and then blame Ukraine for it,” he added. On August 28, the Russian occupation army struck the Simferopol ship of the Ukrainian Navy.
