Ukraine repatriates over 10,000 fallen defenders since start of year

This was announced at Ukraine Media Center by Volodymyr Bilenko, representative of the Central Directorate of Civil-Military Cooperation of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.“This year, as part of repatriation efforts, more than 10,000 bodies have been returned to Ukraine,” Bilenko said.The bodies of fallen defenders are returned from different fronts. In most cases, DNA forensic and molecular testing is required to establish their identity.At the same time, Anastasia Shydlovska, head of the department of the Secretariat of the Commissioner for Persons Missing Under Special Circumstances at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, noted that 23 laboratories in Ukraine conduct DNA testing of repatriated defenders.She emphasized that experts are trying to carry out examinations as quickly as possible.“The Ministry of Internal Affairs is increasing the number of expert institutions conducting DNA tests. Currently, there are 20 institutions within the MIA system that conduct such examinations. This year, three more laboratories were opened within the Ministry of Health system,” Shydlovska said.She added that in addition to DNA, MIA specialists also use special software that makes it possible to identify defenders by distinctive features.On August 19, Russia handed over 1,000 bodies to Ukraine, including fallen soldiers from the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, and Kursk directions.
