Lana Zerkal, the former deputy head of Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, told LIGA.net."When it comes to any foreign contingent on Ukrainian territory, I am always very skeptical about it. Not because I don't believe a foreign contingent is impossible, but because I understand how very small European armies are, and they will not be able to grow very quickly because they do not have mandatory conscription," the diplomat said. She noted that defense spending in EU countries is planned years in advance, and a sharp increase in contingents is only possible in the distant future.Unlike in South Korea, where the demarcation line reaches some 250 km, in Ukraine the combat zone exceeds 1,000 km, Zerkal pointed out."So it's hard to count on someone coming, stationing an army like in Korea, and us living peacefully. A model that was applied elsewhere is unlikely to fit our conditions. Besides, there was a UN mandate there; there will be no UN mandate in our circumstances," the diplomat said.According to Zerkal, a real security guarantee for Ukraine could be its own combat capability and the readiness of partners to provide it with everything necessary — from training and equipment repairs to satellite services and intelligence data. The United States and European leaders are working on developing a comprehensive package of security guarantees for Ukraine.Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported that, in the event of a possible peace agreement, 10 European countries are ready to send their troops to Ukraine as security guarantees. On August 20, the chair of the Bundestag’s Defense Committee said that Germany could send troops to Ukraine after a peace agreement is reached. At the same time, Poland stated it will not send troops to Ukraine because it has "other tasks."
