Reuters reported the information. The possible meeting comes as the United States prepares to impose secondary sanctions — potentially targeting China — in an effort to pressure Moscow into ending its full-scale war against Ukraine. If confirmed, the meeting would mark the first face-to-face between a sitting U.S. and Russian president since President Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva in June 2021, eight months before Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine — the largest military conflict in Europe since World War Two.Trump told reporters: “There’s a good chance that there will be a meeting very soon.” He made the comments during a White House briefing, which was also broadcast by Espreso TV.White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the Kremlin had expressed interest in holding talks, and Trump was open to meeting not only with Putin, but also with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The New York Times reported that Trump informed European leaders during a call on Wednesday that he intended to meet with Putin and hoped to follow it with a trilateral summit involving both Putin and Zelenskyy. Putin and Zelenskyy have not met in person since December 2019 and have repeatedly signaled disdain for each other.Trump also discussed a meeting held earlier that day between Putin and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, which he described on Truth Social as having achieved “great progress,” though he later clarified that he wouldn’t call it a “breakthrough.” A Kremlin aide told Reuters the talks had been “useful and constructive.”During the White House briefing, Trump elaborated:“There’s a very good prospect that they will [meet]. We haven’t determined where, but we had some very good talks with President Putin today. There’s a good chance we could be ending the round — ending the end of that road.”When asked whether the talks marked a breakthrough, he replied,“I wouldn’t call it a breakthrough,” but emphasized that “the U.S. is working on it” and continues to stress the heavy toll of the conflict on both sides.Trump also reiterated that Putin is nearing a deadline to accept a peace proposal.“Yeah, we're pretty much getting close to it right now, but we're having very serious talks right now about getting out of Ukraine, getting it settled, getting it ended. Should have never started. Would have never started. If I were president, it would have never started.,” he said.In the same briefing, Trump warned that countries continuing to buy Russian exports — including oil — could face heavy U.S. tariffs. He specifically mentioned the possibility of 25% duties on Chinese goods, following similar measures already imposed on India for its purchases of Russian oil.“We did it with we did it with India. We're doing it probably with a couple of others. One of them could be China,” he said.On July 29, Donald Trump announced that he had given Russian leader Vladimir Putin 10 days to implement a ceasefire in Ukraine, shortening the previously set deadline. On Wednesday, August 6, U.S. President Donald Trump’s special representative, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Moscow for a meeting with Vladimir Putin. Their dialogue lasted about three hours. According to the White House chief, the talks were productive. That same day, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump held a phone call, which was also joined by European leaders.
