The corresponding resolution, "On Honoring the Memory of Defenders of Ukraine, Members of Volunteer Formations, and Civilians Who Were Executed, Tortured, or Died in Captivity," was voted on at a plenary session of the parliament on July 22.For three years, the Olenivka Community has been requesting the establishment of a national Day of Remembrance for Ukrainians tortured in captivity."This will be a day of remembrance for everyone who died in enemy captivity—both military and civilians who were held by the Russians and died there as a result of poor conditions, torture, or execution. This is important not only for the families of the Olenivka community but also for all families whose loved ones died in enemy captivity. Through our efforts to establish this day, we want to support these people as well," said Oleksandra Mazur, a representative of the NGO Olenivka Community. She added that this is extremely necessary and relevant for everyone right now."If many years had passed, perhaps it would have become a 'formality.' But we are still in this moment, in which even today, Russians are torturing someone in captivity. Just recently, there was news that a civilian died in Russian captivity. This is very relevant now, and it is something that is happening right next to us. This date needs to be officially fixed in the calendar at the state level. We are not even demanding or asking the state to allocate funds for events. We will do everything ourselves. We just need this signature, the final formality, so that the Ukrainian state recognizes: our calendar officially includes the Day of Remembrance for Executed Prisoners," Mazur shared. Why this date matters: in memory of OlenivkaThe date, July 28, marks the anniversary of the terrorist attack on the Olenivka prison in occupied Donetsk region. In the early hours of July 29, 2022, an explosion inside a prison barracks killed at least 53 Ukrainian prisoners of war. According to the Olenivka Community, the fate of 63 victims has been confirmed, while information about others remains unknown. The resolution calls for annual national-level commemoration of Ukrainian defenders, volunteer fighters, and civilians who were executed, tortured, or died while in enemy captivity.
