In short:We know how much Ukraine depends on the support of its allies during wartime.Since Ukraine's allies are democratic countries, their decisions to support Ukraine must take into account public sentiment, views, and opinions of their citizens. Partner governments cannot ignore this.Russia knows this and actively exploits it. That’s why Ukraine is often portrayed as a weak, corrupt country unworthy of support from German, British, or American taxpayers.Literally: “Don’t fund Ukraine, because corrupt officials will steal your aid, and the money collected from the French will only be seen on the French Riviera in Maybachs with Ukrainian plates.”In such a situation, Ukraine should be doing everything possible to show how deceitful Russian propaganda is — that there is justice in Ukraine, that the courts ensure fairness and protect investments, that law enforcement upholds the law, and that officials are performing their duties conscientiously.Instead, we have chosen to show the exact opposite: the only truly independent, albeit symbolic, anti-corruption body has been turned into an ordinary district police station. The government has publicly come out against the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU). The opposition leader is under sanctions solely for being in opposition. TV channels are being taken off the air. Foreign investors are under pressure and complain that the government is preventing them from operating. As a result, without any clear reason, the authorities have created a crisis that puts allied support at risk. And when Russian Telegram channels push the message, “You shouldn’t fight for corrupt officials — look what they did to NABU,” what arguments will Ukraine's strategic communications departments use to counter that?People can have different views on NABU. One might criticize its lack of professionalism, low efficiency, or alleged abuses. Some may even argue that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) is treating NABU just as NABU has treated its own subjects. In essence, they are now facing the very system they helped build. But the fact that this move genuinely harms the country and risks the support of Western democracies is a clear sign of criminal irresponsibility. They’re not just building a dictatorship — they’re building a dictatorship that no one in the world wants.SourceAbout the author.
