1. The fastest possible introduction of secondary “stopping” sanctions (originally 500% tariffs, now reduced to a more realistic 100%) – not done.2. Transferring frozen Russian assets to Ukraine – not done.3. A $300 million package through the PDA mechanism (weapons from existing U.S. stockpiles, authorized directly by the President and delivered fast) – not done.4. A major increase in planned military aid to Ukraine via the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) in the draft 2025–2026 U.S. military budget (currently showing figures up to $500 million) – not done.5. Immediate rollout of a new round of personal sanctions by the U.S. President – not done.6. A clear statement like “time’s up, the U.S. is no longer neutral but siding with Ukraine” – partially done.7. Selling weapons to third countries (or a coalition) with permission to transfer them to Ukraine – largely done. The exact types of weapons haven’t been announced (except for mentions of missile defense systems and related ammunition). Long-range missiles (like JASSM-ER) haven’t been brought up publicly. Conclusion: Russia was effectively given almost two more months (just as Putin asked for) to try and capture more Ukrainian territory. The war remains funded. Stopping sanctions won’t come for at least 50 more days (and realistically, even longer, assuming Congress introduces and the President signs them, which is doubtful). What’s worse, it looks like Russia might have known this ahead of time.On the positive side:The U.S. wants to look neutral, but it hasn’t "left the game." Now, most actions will likely come through a coalition with European countries and Canada. (The positions of other partners on buying weapons for Ukraine still need to be clarified.)The weapons being bought may include items not currently made in Europe, along with longer-range air-to-ground cruise missiles.Bottom line is that the U.S. has sent a clear strategic message: Russia will not be allowed to take control of Ukraine.Let’s put it this way: the decisions made now change little in the short term. But in a couple of months, there’s still a real chance to end this war without Ukraine having to surrender and that chance may actually be growing.SourceAbout the author.
