Latvia sends first APCs to Ukraine as leaders focus on military aid, pressure on Russia

Shmyhal shared the details of the meeting on Telegram.He thanked Latvia for its support of Ukraine in military, political, humanitarian, and sanctions-related areas.“We appreciate that Latvia remains one of the leaders in support relative to GDP,” he emphasized.Prime Minister Siliņa announced that the first batch of Patria heavy armored vehicles provided by Latvia has already arrived in Ukraine, with another shipment on the way. In total, Latvia is delivering 42 units of various equipment, valued at approximately €70 million.“We agreed to deepen cooperation between our manufacturers, particularly in defense production, innovation, and joint manufacturing of equipment and drones. We also discussed the potential use of the EU’s SAFE instrument to fund joint projects,” Shmyhal wrote.The two leaders also discussed the issue of sanctions against Russia.“We expect the EU’s 18th sanctions package to be approved soon, which will further weaken Russia’s ability to fund its war. We must continue increasing pressure on the aggressor,” the Ukrainian Prime Minister stressed.They also addressed Ukraine’s post-war recovery, including potential cooperation with Latvian companies on rebuilding critical infrastructure.Prime Minister Siliņa shared news of her arrival in Kyiv earlier that morning via the social platform X (formerly Twitter):“At the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, I have arrived in Kyiv to take part in the Ukrainian Statehood Day ceremony and meet with Ukraine’s leadership,” she wrote.“Latvia was, is, and will remain with Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is achieved,” Siliņa added.
Note: Ukrainian Statehood Day is celebrated annually on the Day of Remembrance of St. Volodymyr the Great, who brought Christianity to Kievan Rus. The holiday was established to honor over a thousand years of Ukrainian statehood, tracing its origins back to Kievan Rus. It aims to strengthen national unity and highlight the historical continuity and deep roots of Ukrainian statehood. The holiday was instituted by a presidential decree in 2021.Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported a working meeting with Commander of the Latvian Armed Forces, Kaspars Pudans, who visited Ukraine. Pudans was shown the eastern operational zone, where heavy fighting continues.
