Designated German Chancellor Friedrich Merz may make his first foreign visit in office to Ukraine.

Details: According to Welt citing sources in Berlin and Brussels, Merz’s potential visit to Ukraine in early May is currently being prepared.

Welt stated that the visit is expected to coincide with the "coalition of the willing" summit on 9 May, which will take place in Kyiv. The arrival of French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is also expected there.

Welt noted that in that case, it would be Merz’s first foreign visit as German chancellor. However, his spokesperson declined to comment on the media reports.

Background : 

• Merz already visited Ukraine in December 2024, being the German opposition leader, and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
• Earlier, Merz stated his readiness to transfer long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, provided there is coordination with European partners.
