Polish foreign minister accuses Hungary of lacking "moral clarity" on Russia

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has stated that Hungary lacks "moral clarity" regarding Russian aggression against Ukraine, calling it the only country in the EU with such a stance.

Source: Sikorski’s remarks to reporters after the EU Foreign Affairs Council on 14 April, as reported by European Pravda citing PAP

Details: Sikorski noted that the foreign ministers of EU member states had discussed the need for additional sanctions on Russia following its recent attacks on Ukraine.

He said many ministers raised the issue of the EU’s upcoming 17th package of sanctions against the Kremlin.

Quote: "But we know we have one country – Hungary – that lacks the moral clarity we have in light of Putin’s attacks. He [Putin] talks about peace while bombing civilians and killing children.

The victim agrees to a ceasefire, and he [Putin] either worsens the conditions or intensifies attacks. That gives us moral clarity – but apparently not all countries operate with those principles."

More details: The Polish foreign minister also reiterated his call for Hungary to lift its veto on mobilising nearly €7 billion from the European Peace Facility and opening the first negotiation cluster for Ukraine’s EU accession.

"But it’s like talking to a brick wall," he admitted.

Background:

  • Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó had stated that he would not support any initiatives in favour of Ukraine except "efforts aimed at achieving peace".
  • EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas estimated that the 17th package of EU sanctions against Russia will be ready ahead of the next Foreign Affairs Council meeting in May 2025.
