14 police officers injured in Sumy attack, fatalities among other services, Ukraine's Interior Ministry reports

As a result of the Russian missile attack on the city of Sumy on 13 April, 14 police officers were injured, and there are fatalities and injuries among members of other services who were responding to the aftermath of the strike.

Source: Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, as quoted by Ukrainian public broadcaster hromadske

Quote: "I would not like to speak for other services, but sadly, we have losses – both fatalities and injuries. There are no fatalities among police officers."

Details: Klymenko noted that all services responded very swiftly – the police, the State Emergency Service, medics, as well as some additional units and volunteers. A coordination centre was immediately deployed at the scene of the strike. Around 200 people’s homes were affected, so it was necessary to quickly extinguish fires and begin search and rescue operations to ensure no one remained trapped under the rubble.

"We worked as a team, as we’ve learnt to do over this time. The reaction of all emergency and operational services was very quick. This allowed us to save more than one life of our citizens," Klymenko said.

Background:

  • Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that on 13 April the Russians launched two strikes within a two and two and a half minute interval – at 10:15 and 10:17. The attack targeted the city centre and was reportedly carried out with an Iskander-M missile with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead. The missile travels at a speed of over two kilometres per second.
  • It was reported that 34 people had been killed in the Russian attack, including two children, aged 17 and 12. A total of 119 people were injured and around 40 were taken to hospital, including 11 in a critical condition.
