UK intelligence reports Russian manpower losses in 2025

UK Defence Intelligence has analysed the manpower losses sustained by the Russian army in 2025.

Source: UK Defence Intelligence report dated 14 April, as reported by European Pravda

Details: UK intelligence states that as of 2025, Russia has likely sustained around 138,000 casualties – killed and wounded – in its war against Ukraine.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has likely lost more than 920,000 personnel, the report says.

Citing Ukraine’s General Staff, the analysis notes that in March 2025, Russia sustained an average of approximately 1,300 casualties per day. This figure is higher than in February 2025, when the daily average was around 1,250, though it remains below the peak losses of nearly 1,600 per day recorded at the end of 2024.

The report states that this upward trend in losses has continued into early April 2025, likely indicating an increase in Russian assaults along the frontline.

Quote: "Russian forces are likely attempting to rebuild frontline momentum following a period of lower attacks on the opening months of the year."

More details: The assessment also points out that despite a relatively static front line, Russian troop losses in 2025 remain significantly higher than in spring 2024, when daily losses rarely exceeded 1,000.

On 13 April, Ukraine’s General Staff reported that 1,310 Russian troops had been eliminated by the Ukrainian defence forces.

Background:

  • At the end of March, UK intelligence assessed that Russian armed forces had likely suffered approximately 900,000 casualties – killed and wounded – since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
  • In early April, UK intelligence also reported that the advance of Russian forces in Ukraine had slowed since the beginning of 2025 and that the number of attacks had decreased.
