Bundeswehr Inspector General Carsten Breuer believes that the German military should be rearmed by 2029, as this is the time when Russia will be able to attack a NATO country.

Details: Breuer remains hopeful that the United States would remain committed to the alliance under new President Donald Trump while also collaborating with the Americans in the arms sector.

"My biggest challenge at the moment is to ensure the operational readiness of the troops quickly – and I have to do it with all the means available on the market," he said.

"Naturally, we will first have a look in Germany and Europe to see if there is anything on the shelves. If not, then, given the time pressure, we will have to buy in the US as well, if it is available there," Breuer said, adding, "Our goal is 2029; we have to be ready by then".

Breuer noted a "clear threat from Russia", whose 1.5 million-strong armed forces will be twice as large next year as they were before the aggression against Ukraine.

"We see that about 1,500 battle tanks are either produced anew every year or taken out of storage and refurbished – much more than is needed for the war against Ukraine. And the [Russian] warehouses are being filled with ammunition," Breuer said.

He has estimated that Russia will be "capable of a large-scale conventional attack, even on NATO territory, by 2029".

Putin's goal, he said, is to "weaken and destroy NATO as an alliance and discredit our Western form of society".
