The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has hired the American law firm Hogan Lovells US to take part in negotiations with the United States regarding a mineral resources agreement.

Details: The US Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) registry on Friday included information about Hogan Lovells US registering on 9 April to act on behalf of Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice.

The registry also states that this law firm was previously engaged in 2023 by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation to assist with organising an exhibition in the US Capitol on Russian war crimes in Ukraine. [The Victor Pinchuk Foundation is a private charitable organisation founded by Ukrainian businessman and philanthropist Victor Pinchuk – ed.]

Background:

• A Ukrainian delegation headed by Deputy Economy Minister and Trade Representative Taras Kachka has already arrived in the United States for consultations on the mineral resources agreement.
• The consultations are expected to last two days and will be mostly technical in nature, without the involvement of high-ranking officials.
• Earlier, Ukraine’s Minister of Economy Yuliia Svyrydenko stated that Ukraine would send a team to Washington this week to launch negotiations on a new draft agreement on mineral resources.
• European Pravda reported that the Trump administration reintroduced a clause into a proposed agreement on Ukrainian subsoil resources that obliges Ukraine to repay the full amount of US aid provided since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
