Finnish President Alexander Stubb has said that the United States is developing sanctions against Russia in case it refuses to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or violates it.
Source Stubb at a press conference in London on Sunday 30 March, as reported by European Pravda citing Yle Details Stubb noted that Finland views 20 April as a suitable date for a full, unconditional ceasefire.
Why 20 April Because we need a deadline.
Because its Easter.
And because President Trump will have been in office for three months, the Finnish president explained.
He stated that if Russia does not agree to a truce or breaches it, a strong sanctions mechanism will be necessary.
Stubb revealed that such sanctions are already being prepared in the United States.
Quote We also discussed this with President Trump and Senator Lindsey Graham, the architect of the sanctions package.
He will soon present it with the support of fifty senators in the United States.
Details Senator Lindsey Graham was also present at the meeting in Florida, where Stubb and Trump played golf, among other activities.
At the press conference, Stubb was asked specifically what Trump thinks about the sanctions.
Graham and President Trump have a close relationship.
Of course, not everything Senator Graham plans will come to pass.
But I got the impression that patience is running out on the American side as well and I think thats a good thing, the Finnish president said.
He added that Trumps patience is also wearing thin.
Quote Hes very impatient with Russias actions, with this scheming and stalling over a ceasefire.
I tried to explain that this is typical Russian behaviour.
First you agree on something, and then they come back with new conditions.
More details Stubb urged the public to pay close attention to Grahams statements in the coming days.
He said that he has seen parts of the sanctions package, and if they materialise, they will have a very significant impact.
Stubb also revealed he told Trump that Russia understands only strength and that means sanctions and the use of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.
Background On Sunday 30 March, Trump said he was very angry and pissed off with recent remarks from Vladimir Putin about imposing external governance on Ukraine.
Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Russian oil and announced plans to hold a new conversation with Putin this week to discuss Ukraine.
