Trump advisers admit Ukraine peace deal will take months, Reuters says

Advisers to US President-elect Donald Trump have conceded that the process of ending the Russo-Ukrainian war will take months or even longer, rather than the one day Trump had promised during his election campaign.

Details : The Trump associates estimate it will take months to resolve the Ukraine war. They noted that the promise to end the war in one day was a combination of election hype, a lack of understanding of the intractability of the conflict and the time needed to form a new administration.

The assessments from Reuters sources align with comments made by retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg, Trump's new envoy for Russia and Ukraine. In an interview with Fox News last week, Kellogg expressed a desire to have a "solution" to the war within 100 days.

Although the exact contours of Trump's peace plan are still being discussed, Trump's advisers generally support taking Ukraine's NATO membership off the table, at least for the foreseeable future, and freezing the war on the current front lines.

Most of Trump's senior advisers also back providing Ukraine with material security guarantees, such as establishing a demilitarised zone patrolled by European troops.

So far, the Trump team's efforts to end the war have "proceeded in fits and starts", revealing the stark contrast between campaign pledges and the intricate realities of diplomatic negotiations.

Background :

  • US Senator Marco Rubio, Trump's pick for secretary of state, said on Wednesday during a Senate hearing that both Ukraine and Russia must make concessions in order for the Russo-Ukrainian war to end.
  • Pete Hegseth, Trump's choice for US Secretary of Defense, stated that the incoming administration understands the nature of the full-scale war in Ukraine and is determined to bring it to an end as swiftly as possible.
  • Ukraine's European allies expressed cautious optimism that Trump would not force Kyiv into premature negotiations with Russia.
