JD Vance, the future Vice President in Donald Trump's incoming administration, has stated that the United States has no need to use military force in Greenland, adding that a "deal could be reached" concerning the island.

Quote from Vance: "We don’t have to use military force. The thing that people often ignore is that we already have troops [stationed] in Greenland."

Details: Vance claimed that during a recent visit by Donald Trump Jr. to Greenland, local residents had expressed a desire "to be empowered to develop the resources there". He criticised the Danish government, saying they have not done enough to ensure the region’s security.  

Quote:"Frankly, the current leadership – the Danish government – hasn’t done a good enough job of securing Greenland," Vance said.  

He called it a "real opportunity" for the United States to "take leadership, to protect America’s security, to ensure that those incredible natural resources are developed".  

Quote:"And that’s what Donald Trump is good at – he’s good at making deals. And I think there’s a deal to be made in Greenland," Vance concluded. 

Background:

• Donald Trump, the incoming US president, has previously declined to rule out the use of military or economic force to assert control over Greenland, describing the issue as a matter of US national security.  
• In response, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed that Greenland belongs to its people. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, added that the island does not wish to be American or Danish but instead is seeking to be independent.
