Court allows pro-Russian MP Shufrych to exercise parliamentary powers

A court has ruled that MP Nestor Shufrych, who is suspected of high treason and is an MP from the now-banned pro-Russian political party Opposition Platform – For Life, be allowed to exercise his parliamentary powers.

Source : court ruling, which is in the possession of MP Oleksii Honcharenko

Details : It is noted that Shufrych filed a petition stating that he wanted to exercise his parliamentary powers.

The court refused to allow him to physically participate in the parliamentary meetings but ordered that he be allowed to exercise his parliamentary powers while staying in the detention centre.

Quote from Honcharenko: "The court sent the ruling to the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) for consultations.

I wonder how this issue will be resolved. According to the rules of procedure, an MP can only vote on bills in the session hall, which means that Shufrych will not be able to vote.

But in theory, he can participate online, for example, in committee meetings. Or submit bills and resolutions through his assistants."

Background:

  • Shufrych and his former assistant Viacheslav Cherepan are accused of financing actions to change and overthrow the constitutional order, seize state power and change the borders of the territory and state border of Ukraine. This includes the transfer of funds to pay for the work of a security firm in occupied Crimea in 2016. Both defendants deny the charges.
  • Shufrych is also accused of high treason.
  • On 3 September, prosecutors sent an indictment against Shufrych and his former assistant to court.
