Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his condolences to the American people over the fires raging in California.

Quote:"I spoke with Biden. I expressed my condolences over the terrible fires in California and the loss of life. I praised the heroism of the Americans who are helping to save people from the fire and stop the wildfires from spreading."

Details:The leaders also discussed details of a new US sanctions package focused on the Russian energy sector that helps Putin fund the war.

Quote: "We discussed the situation on the battlefield and the need to further strengthen our air shield and protect life in Ukrainian cities and villages from Russian terror – from daily attacks by Russian missiles and drones. Patriot systems in Ukrainian hands have proved their effectiveness, and we need to increase this strength."

Background:The fires between Santa Monica and Malibu in California which broke out on 8 January are considered the worst ever recorded. The fire has engulfed an area of over 13,750 hectares, destroyed the homes of Hollywood stars, and claimed the lives of at least 10 people.
