Moldova calls energy crisis in Transnistria part of Russia's larger plan

The Moldovan government has stated that the energy crisis in the unrecognised republic of Transnistria, caused by the halt in Russian gas supplies, is part of a broader Russian plan of manipulation and propaganda.

Source: Daniel Vodă, spokesperson for the Moldovan government, cited by Moldpres

Details: Vodă noted that the region's energy situation has deteriorated significantly and became worrying since Gazprom stopped delivering gas.

Quote: "This energy crisis is more than an economic problem – it is part of a larger Russian manipulation and propaganda plan aimed at generating fear and discontent on both sides of the Dniester."

Details: Vodă emphasised that this crisis resulted from the refusal of the so-called Transnistrian authorities to "cooperate for the good of the people". He also noted that the crisis has been accompanied by a wave of disinformation.

Quote: "The idea that Chisinau is to blame for the crisis on the left bank is being spread; the energy cuts are being presented as an "intentional action" of the Moldovan authorities to "punish" the inhabitants of the left bank of the Dniester; the repeated refusal of the so-called authorities to accept alternative solutions offered by Chisinau is being avoided."

Vodă concluded that Russian propaganda seeks to construct a narrative in which Moldova is portrayed as a problematic actor failing to address the crisis, despite the government's clear solutions to avoid it.

Background:

  • Since 1 January, Transnistria has stopped receiving Russian gas, leaving tens of thousands of households without gas and halting local industry.
  • The Moldovan power plant in Transnistria, which previously operated on free Russian gas, has switched to burning coal reserves that will last only until the end of January.
  • On 3 January, rolling blackouts were introduced in Transnistria, alongside disruptions to water supply services.
