President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the Ukrainian diplomatic corps on the occasion of Diplomats Day, outlining how they should persuade partners to agree to Ukraines accession to NATO.
Source Zelenskyy in a speech on Diplomats Day, as reported by European Pravda Details Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraines invitation to NATO and membership in the Alliance are purely political decisions.
However, he said that world leaders courage in such matters is always based on the demands of public opinion.
Quote When society takes a step forward, it becomes difficult for a state leader, even an oldschool one, to remain in the same position.
That is why it is crucial that Ukraines efforts regarding NATO do not remain confined to offices, the President said.
He stated that in relations with relevant countries, as well as in all other countries that can help with crucial decisions, diplomats must strive every day to mould public opinionusing methods that are effective, not just convenient.
Partners need to understand what Ukraine can offer the Alliance, why this will benefit everyone, and how it will stabilize global relations.
Alliance for Ukraine is achievable, but only if we fight for this decision at every necessary level, Zelenskyy said.
Background At the end of November, Zelenskyy acknowledged for the first time the possibility of Ukraine signing a ceasefire agreement if the Ukrainiancontrolled territory is brought under the NATO umbrella.
The Ukrainian government has previously emphasised that the Alliance will not extend an invitation to join until the war is over and said that such accession would take place within internationally recognised borders.
