Macron to raise issue of peacekeeping mission for Ukraine at EU summit

French President Emmanuel Macron at the EU leaders summit on 1819 December will raise the issue of deploying a UN peacekeeping mission to Ukraine in case of a ceasefire and peace between Ukraine and Russia.

But, as Radio Libertys source said, this discussion is inevitable, given the French presidents visit to Poland and the media debate on sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, Donald Trumps upcoming accession to power in the US, and the need to hold a discussion regarding the war in Ukraine with him.
Two other diplomats also noted that this topic is being raised precisely to prepare for a conversation with the US presidentelect and to ensure the EUs participation in peace talks.
At the same time, they said, the topic of European troops is not being developed and remains at the level of an idea.
Background France is trying to assemble a coalition of 58 European countries determined to act, Reuters reported, citing diplomats.
The agency also reported that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will convene a separate meeting on the situation in Ukraine with the leaders of Ukraine, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Poland on the sidelines of a summit in Brussels on 18 December.
Macron has not yet officially proposed sending a mission to Ukraine.
