Trump does not rule out possibility of reducing assistance to Ukraine

US President-elect Donald Trump has admitted that he could reduce US aid to Kyiv after he returns to the White House on 20 January.

Source:Trump in an interview with NBC News, as reported by European Pravda

Details:In response to the journalist's direct question on whether Ukraine should expect a decrease in US military aid whenever President Trump comes to the White House, the Republican said, "Probably. Sure."

Prior to the November election, Trump chastised Joe Biden's administration for overspending on Ukraine aid. However, his administration was unable to bring the Russian-Ukrainian war to an end.

Following his victory, Trump largely avoided discussing his administration's approach on the Russian-Ukrainian war, instead emphasising the need for it to stop.

To the journalist's statement that Trump vowed to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine in 24 hours, even before becoming president, he responded, "I am trying."

Trump also stated that he did not interact with Vladimir Putin, the head of the Kremlin, after winning the election. However, he swiftly clarified that he hadn't "spoken to him recently."

When asked if he spoke with Putin after the election, Trump declined to comment, citing his desire not to jeopardise the discussions.

Trump also stated that there had been hundreds of thousands of dead on both sides, and that the war "would never have happened."

Background:

  • Trump, after meeting with Zelenskyy in Paris and amid the fall of the Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, revealed Kyiv's desire to reach an agreement to end the war.
  • President Zelenskyy argued that Ukraine required a just and steady peace that the Russians would not destroy in a few years, as they have previously done.
