Coffin prices in Russia rise by 74% since start of full-scale war

The cost of manufacturing coffins in Russia has surged by 74% since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Source: The Moscow Times, citing Rosstat, Russia's Federal State Statistics Service

Details: As of October 2024, the average price of a coffin in Russia reached RUB 7,711 (approximately US$76), compared to RUB 4,437 (approximately US$44) in January 2022.

A significant increase in coffin prices began in the initial months of the invasion. Between February and August 2022, production costs rose by 12%, or RUB 548 (approximately US$5,4).

Another spike in "funeral inflation" followed shortly after the announcement of mobilisation: in September 2022, a coffin cost RUB 4,998 (approximately US$49), but by February 2023, the price rose to RUB 6,669 (approximately US$65,5) – a 33% increase.

Overall, coffin prices rose by 48% in 2022, nearly 12% in 2023, and an additional 10% in the first nine months of 2024.

In some regions, coffin prices have more than doubled. For example: Sakhalin Oblast – 181% increase, Omsk Oblast – 162%, Tambov Oblast – 104%, Smolensk Oblast – 103% (2023 data).
