US lifts sanctions on Belarusian potash

US President's Special Envoy to Belarus John Coale has said that the United States has lifted sanctions on Belarusian potash.

Source: BelTA, a Belarusian state-owned news outlet; European Pravda

Details: Talks between Belarusian self-proclaimed president Alexander Lukashenko and the US special envoy continued on Saturday 13 December.

Quote: "Acting on President Trump's instructions, the US is lifting sanctions on potash. I believe this is a very good step by the US for Belarus. We are lifting them as of now."

More details: Coale has noted that discussions on sanctions will continue.

Quote: "As relations between the two countries normalise, more sanctions will be lifted."

More details: Coale has also expressed hope that in the future the two sides will reach a point where there are no sanctions at all.

Background:

  • Donald Trump's administration has been trying to build contact with the regime in Minsk, evidenced by the release of 52 Belarusian political prisoners.
  • As part of these efforts, the United States has lifted sanctions on the Belarusian state-owned airline Belavia.
  • On 4 November, the US Treasury Department also eased certain sanctions on Belarus, lifting restrictions on the national airline and permitting operations connected to Lukashenko's aircraft.
