Depot and 27 suburban train carriages destroyed in 6 December Russian attack on Fastiv

A suburban electric train depot and 27 suburban train carriages were destroyed in a Russian strike on the city of Fastiv, Kyiv Oblast, on the night of 5-6 December.

Details: Balesta visited Fastiv together with representatives of the embassies of Germany, France and Switzerland and Julie Davis, US Chargé d'Affaires in Ukraine.
Quote: "This was a targeted strike on civilian infrastructure. Three upgraded electric trains have also been destroyed – 27 carriages in total.These were suburban trains that provided services in Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts. It is estimated that about UAH 300 million (US$7.1 million) worth of damage was caused."
More details: Balesta said it will cost around UAH 100 million (US$2.4 million) to rebuild the depot.
Work is currently ongoing to clear the site. The station building is also being stripped back to its frame.
Quote: "Temporary modular facilities have been deployed to provide the basic infrastructure needed for people travelling to and from Fastiv."
More details: Balesta urged Ukraine's international partners to join the effort to rebuild the facilities destroyed by the Russian strike.
He also stressed that this was the first such large-scale attack on railway infrastructure in Kyiv Oblast.
Background:
- Russian forces struck the key railway station in Fastiv on the night of 5-6 December, prompting Ukraine's state-run railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) to make changes to train schedules.
- The railway station in Fastiv damaged by the Russian strike will be completely demolished and replaced with a new building.
