Zelenskyy reveals details of meeting with Meloni in Rome

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reported back on his meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome, revealing that their talks focused on the negotiations regarding a potential peace agreement to end the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Details: Zelenskyy said that he and Meloni had a "very substantive" discussion on all aspects of the diplomatic situation.
Quote: "I briefed her on the work of our negotiating team, and we are coordinating our diplomatic efforts. We are counting greatly on Italy's continued support – it matters for Ukraine."
More details: Zelenskyy also said he had thanked her for Italy's package of energy assistance, which includes equipment that is exactly what Ukraine needs.
Background:
- Zelenskyy's visit to Italy is the latest in his diplomatic tour of Europe. The day before, he met the leaders of the UK, France and Germany in London. The meeting also included an online call with a wider group of leaders from the Coalition of the Willing.
- The Ukrainian leader then travelled to Brussels for meetings with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and EU leaders before heading to Rome.
- On 9 December, Zelenskyy also said that work is now complete on the Ukrainian and European proposals regarding the "peace plan" at the level of national security advisers and ready to be presented to the United States.
- Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has come out with another series of remarks about Ukraine. Among other things, he said that Ukraine needs to hold elections to remain a democracy and claimed that Russia has a better negotiating position. He also referred to Crimea as being surrounded by an ocean.
