EU agrees to ban Russian gas imports starting 2027

The EU Council reported the information.According to the agreed rules, a complete ban on the import of Russian liquefied natural gas will come into force on January 1, 2027. Imports will completely cease by September 30, 2027. Gas purchases made without prior contracts will cease by June 2026. Supplies of liquefied gas under long-term contracts are to end on January 1, 2027, and pipeline gas supplies by September 30, 2027.A transitional period was provided for existing contracts. Any changes will only be allowed for technical reasons and will not be able to increase supply volumes.Exceptions were provided for some supplier countries with large export volumes to the EU. The regulation also provides for penalties for violations of the rules and the possibility of temporarily suspending the ban in case of an extraordinary threat to the energy security of individual states. The document will enter into force after formal approval by the EU Council and the European Parliament.At the end of October, the EU Council overwhelmingly approved the RePowerEU plan, which provides for the complete rejection of Russian fossil fuels by the European Union.
