Budapest delegation trip to Moscow is "sovereign foreign policy", says Hungarian foreign minister

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has attempted to defend the latest trip of the Hungarian delegation to Moscow, calling it "sovereign foreign policy".
Source: Szijjártó in a video address on Facebook, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Szijjártó believes that "many do not understand the meeting" between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin, and "many try to misunderstand or misinterpret it".
Quote: "And I would like to say just one thing to them. Hungary is a sovereign country. Hungary has a sovereign foreign policy. This is a foreign policy based on national interests, a foreign policy in which decisions are made according to national interests."
Details: The foreign minister also said that Budapest already maintains "cooperation with Türkiye based on mutual respect, cooperation that is balanced and forms the foundation of Hungary's energy security".
"Therefore, we are interested in ensuring that this cooperation with Russia continues to be based on mutual respect, remains balanced and today's meeting contributed to that," Szijjártó added.
Background:
- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticised Orbán for his visit to Putin, saying he "travels without European mandate and consultations".
- Orbán said he was travelling to the Russian capital to secure affordable energy supplies for Hungary for the winter and the coming year.
