Quote: "Yesterday, 14 civilians, citizens of the Russian Federation, were transferred to Russia, and another 16 Russians were handed over today".
Details: The project stressed that thousands of Ukrainian civilians – women, children and elderly people – are being illegally held in Russia.
The I Want to Live project said that from the very first days of the full-scale invasion, Russian troops have systematically taken civilians hostage, detaining and torturing people before transporting them to Russia.
A significant number of these people were later designated by Russia as "prisoners of war" and are only being offered for return in exchange for captured Russian military personnel.
To date, Ukraine has succeeded in bringing back 372 civilian hostages.
I Want to Live is a project run by Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, established to assist Russian soldiers in voluntarily surrendering. A hotline for applications from Russian military personnel and their families was launched in September 2022.
Background: A Ukrainian prisoner of war was struck with a rifle butt and executed by Russian forces on the Pokrovsk front. An investigation has been launched.
