Ukrenergo CEO explains worst-case scenario for Ukraine's energy system under Russian attacks

The worst-case scenario for Ukraine's power system under Russian attacks is a blackout – something power engineers already went through in autumn 2022 – but Ukrenergo, Ukraine's state-owned electricity transmission operator, and power plants are now far better prepared.

Quote: "We have already been through the worst-case scenario and we know what it is like. The aggressor's goal is to completely cut off the power system and bring it to a blackout.
This happened in 2022, but we handled it fairly quickly, although of course no one was preparing for such large-scale attacks.
At the moment, Russia's goal remains the same – to leave Ukraine without light and water – but we are much better prepared now, both Ukrenergo and the power plants.
There is engineering protection, there is air defence, and there are established special actions for personnel to take in advance in order to prevent the loss of stability of the power system – to preserve it first of all, and only then restore supply to consumers."
Details: Zaichenko also explained that the recent decrease in power cuts is due to the high pace of recovery work and the availability of the necessary reserve equipment.
Quote: "The fact that there are fewer outages now is not a miracle but the dedicated work of power engineers. A huge advantage is that, thanks to our partners, a large amount of equipment has been stockpiled in warehouses, which allows us to repair damage quickly."
