Details: Senator Mitch McConnell, former Republican leader in the Senate, said it appears that people around Trump are more focused on appeasing Putin than securing a sustainable peace.
"Putin has spent the entire year trying to play President Trump for a fool. If Administration officials are more concerned with appeasing Putin than securing real peace, then the President ought to find new advisors. Rewarding Russian butchery would be disastrous to America's interests. And a capitulation like Biden's abandonment of Afghanistan would be catastrophic to a legacy of peace through strength," McConnell stated.
Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, co-chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the proposal looks more like "Putin's plan".
"What the US needs to do is to put pressure on Putin, to provide those long-range weapons, to put secondary sanctions on the companies that are fuelling Russia's war machine, and bring Putin to the table to really negotiate. We should not be representing Russia in this deal," she stressed.
Republican Roger Wicker, the chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, noted that the 28-point plan has serious flaws and that he is "highly sceptical" about its ability to deliver peace.
"Ukraine should not be forced to give up its lands to one of the world's most flagrant war criminals in Vladimir Putin. The size and disposition of Ukraine's armed forces is a sovereign choice for its government and people.
And any assurances provided to Putin should not reward his malign behaviour or undermine the security of the United States or allies. In particular, any suggestion that we can pursue arms control with a serial liar and killer like Putin should be treated with great scepticism," Wicker said.
Republican Brian Fitzpatrick has begun collecting signatures to bring to a vote a bill on strengthened sanctions against Russia.
Background:
- Trump has given Ukraine until 27 November to agree to the American "peace plan".
- On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered an address to the nation, saying Ukraine now faces a difficult choice and risks either losing its dignity or its key partner.
