EU has a clear two-point plan for peace in Ukraine, says EU chief diplomat

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas says the EU has a clear plan for achieving peace in Ukraine that consists of only two points: first, weakening Russia, and second, supporting Ukraine.

Details: Kallas outlined the EU's simple plan for achieving peace: support for Ukraine and pressure aimed at weakening Russia.
"The European Union has always supported a just, lasting and comprehensive peace. Today, we discussed, of course, the latest developments, and Minister Sybiha briefed us on Ukraine's perspective," Kallas said.
She stressed that the EU's stance has not changed: "For any peace plan to succeed, it has to be supported by Ukraine, and it has to be supported by Europe".
"The EU has a very clear two-point plan: first, weaken Russia; second, support Ukraine," the EU's chief diplomat emphasised.
Kallas said that the head of the EU Intelligence and Situation Centre and the EU sanctions envoy briefed ministers today on the impact of EU sanctions on Russia.
According to this information, Russia's crude oil exports are at their lowest level in recent months, and Russia's oil-related tax revenues are at their lowest since the start of the war.
"Russia has repeatedly paid lip service for peace talks, and previous talks fell apart because Russia never made any real commitments. The pressure must be on the aggressor, not on the victim," Kallas stated.
Background :
- Information about a new peace plan approved by US President Donald Trump appeared in several US media outlets on 19 November.
- Publications mentioned that the plan envisions handing the whole of Donbas to Russia. Ukraine would also have to limit its weapons arsenal, halve its army and accept Russian as a second state language.
- Kallas noted that the European Union welcomes efforts to end the war in Ukraine, but any such plan must involve Ukraine and Europe.
