Trump sends Pentagon representatives to Ukraine as part of peace talks effort – WSJ, Politico

Western media outlets have reported that US President Donald Trump has sent a high-level Pentagon delegation to Kyiv for talks on Wednesday 19 November as part of his administration's attempt to revive talks on ending Russia's war in Ukraine.

Details : The WSJ wrote that two officials had said US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, together with two US Army generals, is set to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other officials as well as senior military and industry representatives. Driscoll also plans to meet Russian officials later.
According to Politico, the visit by the American delegation comes as Russia has intensified deadly missile and drone attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine and Western partners are trying to find new ways to continue supplying arms to a country at war.
Quote from the WSJ : "The White House decision to turn to Driscoll and senior military officers is driven in part by the belief that Moscow might be more open to military-brokered negotiations and by frustration that multiple previous attempts have yielded little."
Details : "…Secretary Driscoll is travelling to Ukraine to get a sense of facts on the ground. He will participate in meetings in Ukraine and report his findings back to the White House," a senior administration official said. "The president [US President Donald Trump] has been clear that it is time to stop the killing and make a deal to end the war."
Another administration official said Driscoll's mission is to revive peace talks on Trump's behalf.
The WSJ added that Driscoll's superior, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, had not visited Kyiv since taking office in January. Sending a civilian Army secretary, whose work focuses mainly on training and equipping soldiers, is an unusual step. But Trump often relies on such envoys, including special envoy Steve Witkoff.
It is unclear whether Driscoll shared with Zelenskyy any new proposal from the White House, which had previously called for freezing military actions by both sides along the current line of contact in Ukraine's east to speed up talks.
According to one official cited by the WSJ, the idea to send Driscoll – a Yale Law School classmate of Vice President JD Vance – first to Ukraine and then to Russia arose during a conversation between Trump and Vance.
Quote from Politico : "The focus of the trip will be to engage Ukrainian leadership on the stalled peace process with Russia, even though Moscow has rebuffed all previous attempts by the US and Ukraine to bring the fighting to a halt."
Background : Earlier, the media revealed that Trump's administration had been secretly working with Russia on developing a new plan to end the war in Ukraine.
