Details: Von der Leyen is expected to try to convince De Wever to drop Belgium's resistance to the European Commission's proposal to finance a €140 billion loan.
Background:
- The upcoming meeting between von der Leyen and De Wever follows preparatory talks between senior Commission officials and the Belgian government last Friday, which produced no breakthrough.
- The Commission has proposed allowing EU governments to use most of Russia's sovereign assets frozen in Europe to support Ukraine without fully confiscating them.
- However, the plan has stalled due to Belgium's concerns: the majority of these Russian assets are held on Belgian territory.
- The EU stated that the issue of using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine remains on the agenda, and a final decision will be made in December 2025.
