Details: Residents of Novorossiysk began reporting multiple explosions and air defence responding at around midnight. Photos and videos showing a large-scale fire in the port area were posted soon after.
The main target of the attack was the Sheskharis oil-loading complex, a key energy facility operated by the Russian state company Transneft.
The Sheskharis oil terminal is the end point of major pipelines that transport a significant share of Russia's export oil, including the Urals grade.
Together with the nearby terminal of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which handles mostly Kazakh oil, the port of Novorossiysk ships over two million barrels of oil per day, accounting for about five per cent of global seaborne supply.
Airports in the nearby cities of Krasnodar and Gelendzhik temporarily suspended operations following the attack.
Besides the damage to the oil terminal, there are reports of a hit on an ammunition depot in a military base as well as on an air defence system site.
Background: On 24 September, Russian authorities claimed that drones had attacked Novorossiysk in Krasnodar Krai, where one of the Russian Federation's Black Sea naval bases is located.
