Khrystyna Shkudor, advocacy manager of the PR Army public organization, stated this on Espreso TV."As I already mentioned, many people don't even know that we have civilians in captivity. Of course, no one will give exact figures, because only the Russian Federation knows them, and it categorically denies that these people are behind bars with them, because they are not charged with anything," she said.Shkudor added that human rights activists say that between 16,000 and 60,000 Ukrainian civilians are currently behind bars."And there's even such an interesting fact that Russians in Crimea have started building new prisons because there's nowhere to keep these people, there's simply not enough space. And as I already mentioned, they have no legal status. If prisoners of war, for example, can be exchanged, then civilians, firstly, the Russian Federation does not recognize that they are behind bars at all. Secondly, they cannot be exchanged because it is outside international law. Without any charges, without court verdicts, without anything," emphasized the advocacy manager. She noted that there are very frequent requests because they deal with this topic - civilians in captivity, their relatives write requests, and Russian prisons do not even recognize that these people are there."Maybe someone from the prisoners of war was released and they simply report that they were behind bars and these people were with them. They contact their relatives and find out that way. Otherwise, these are often people who have simply gone missing. That is, nothing is known about them at all. And unfortunately, such a story is not isolated, so we are trying to draw as much attention as possible from the world community to this, because all civilians must be released unconditionally, according to international conventions and international law," Shkudor concluded.
