Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) reported the information. This is the first case in Ukraine's history where a Russian serviceman received the maximum penalty specifically for executing a prisoner of war.The investigation established that Kurashov, a former convict in Russia, signed a contract with the aggressor country's Defense Ministry in November 2023 in exchange for amnesty and joined the Storm-V assault unit of the 127th Motorized Rifle Division. On January 6, 2024, during battles near the village of Pryiutne, he shot an unarmed Ukrainian soldier who had surrendered. After this, units of the Defense Forces recaptured enemy positions and took Kurashov and four other soldiers prisoner.Based on evidence collected by military counterintelligence and SBU investigators, the court found the Russian guilty of committing a war crime under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The investigation was conducted under the procedural guidance of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor's Office. On June 30, the SBU collected evidence against another Russian serviceman who participated in the executions of captured Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers during the repeated invasion of the Kharkiv region by the Russians in 2024.
